In the sweltering heat of Bangkok in 1985, young Mali would often find her grandmother, Yai, fanning herself on their wooden porch, the rhythmic creak of the swing set to the distant buzz of tuk-tuks. The air, thick with the scent of jasmine and exhaust fumes, always carried the promise of something sweet during mango season. Mali's older brother, Somchai, would return from school, his bicycle bell jingling a joyful tune, eager to help Yai peel the ripe, golden fruit. Their little house, modest but filled with laughter and the clatter of wok cooking, was a hub of simple pleasures, where family stories were shared over sticky rice and mango, and the evening breeze brought relief after long, sun-drenched days.
